Hooking for cash in Simply Crochet #44

Did you see it? Did you read it? In the latest issue 44 of Simply Crochet I'm being featured in an article about being an Etsy shop owner. It is always a weird feeling to see yourself pictured in a magazine... I'm actually quite shy so I simply blushed when opening up to see this. Little me in the Simply Crochet magazine, I'm humbled...

I'm excited to say I'm rubbing magazine spread shoulders with creative and talented women like Becky Skuse at Make Me Do, crochet designer Hannah Cross at HanJan Crochet and Cécile Balladino at Gipsybazar in this article by Judy Darley. It turned out to be a great article filled with inspiring stories, tips and tricks about Hooking for cash, as the headline says.

I thought I should write a post about being an Etsy owner as a complement to the article. How is it really? Was it hard to set up the shop? Is it time consuming to run an Etsy shop? What about currencies, fees, prices, shipping costs, packaging...??? You know... just some pointers out of my experience... So I started to write but found it hard to know where to start and what to talk about so... I thought I should ask you instead:

What would you like to know about
being or becoming an Etsy shop owner?

Ask me anything you would like to know about it and I'll do my best to share my story and tips and tricks with you in a future blog post. And before I go - THANK YOU so much for all your comments and messages on my Ravelry blog post. I feel so much more confident there now and have learned so many new tips and tricks about it. Looking forward to keep on exploring. You have been a fantastic help. Forever grateful. :) I still need to fix a Ravelry button in my sidebar... and at the bottom of the blog posts... It is noted and added to my To-do list...

  1. I would like answers to all the etsy questions hehe. My partner and I want to open an etsy shop (mostly photography, jewellery and maybe even some cheeky crochet). How do you decide on your prices and any tips for promoting yourself? (I am introverted and self publicity doesn't come naturally).

  2. These stories inspire me. You come so modest about it, that makes a human being extra nice !

  3. Congrats on the article Annette, thanks for friending me on Ravelry, and no you do not have to friend everyone who asks, but I thank you anyway.

  4. For me, the biggest challenge has been pricing. I don't want to work for free, but I don't want to price myself out of the very competitive market either. I still haven't hit on a formula I'm completely happy with. I've suggestions for 2 or 3 times the price of the materials. I've wondered about using a price based on the yardage with variations depending on the complexity of the pattern but have no idea what I should be setting it at.

  5. Yes, please!! I am already on Etsy but I would love to read your tips and pointers as you are my crochet, blogging and Etsy guru :) I love your blog posts and somehow you always write about the exact things going on in my mind. Whether it is about Ravelry, pattern designing, craft fairs, or life in general. On a couple of occasions, my jaw has dropped in a "How did she know I was thinking that" fashion! :) You have a positive outlook on life and I adore you for that. Have a lovely weekend.

  10. And do you use your home address as the return address when you send off packages? I've always wondered that about Etsy shop owners.

  11. How fantastic to be featured in a magazine! I have not seen it but will seek it out. I have lots of questions about etsy shops but my main ones are how do people find you on there and do you sell alot? Is it daily/weekly sales? Do people go to your shop from your blog? I have thought about selling things on etsy but think my little shop would be lost on there. Thanks for any tips :)

  12. Congratulations on the magazine feature! I'd love to read your thoughts on being an Etsy shop owner, I started my own little shop this year (and am thrilled to have had one sale). My question is how did/do you grown your shop - how do you decide what products to add and did you start out to sell patterns and yarn kits or did it evolve that way? X

  14. No questions, but I wanted to congratulate you! Lovely article. Also, your vignette/layout in that first picture is so wonderful, I saved it to use as iPad wallpaper. Blue and white china plus pretty yarn and stitchy things? Be still my heart. ;-)

  17. Congratulations! Be proud of yourself!! :)It`s a big thing being featured in a magazin and you really deserve it!! :) Well done, Annette!!
Like you would just read my mind.. :) I have opened an Etsy shop about a week ago but still afraid to promote it.. I don`t have a nice banner and logo yet and I am still very unsure how much should I invest in the shop. What if I won`t sell the things I buy now?? I am selling some Tilda fabrics and some handmade items at the moment. In the summer I am going to have Catania yarn as well. on some days I think it is going to be great, on others I am totally unsure and afraid..
How do you convince yourself that it is worth doing it if sometimes you just don`t know? Does it really worth it?
How can you make a nice Etsy banner?
Honestly, I would be interested in anything related this topic..:) Perfect timing for me! ;)
Thank you for sharing your experience and advices! It means a lot!! <3

  18. Hi Annette,
Fame at last!!! Great that you are in the magazine...I will have to get one if I can. You deserve the publicity you work so hard with your patterns and are so passionate about the craft. You inspire me that's for sure. It is nice to see yourself or your craft in a magazine. I used to do a lot of paper crafting and was in a magazine a couple of times with my creations. I have a you tube tutorial channel look me up, just do a search on my name ( Julie Woodward). I also have a blog...paperpathway, but I haven't done anything for about a year now as I needed a break from it.
Have a good week, hugs from me xxx
